As photographers, we all have our favorite images, not necessarily popular with the general viewer, but carrying a special memory, inspiration, or feeling. This is a photo that I can enjoy over and over again.
The location is Bowling Ball Beach, an arduous drive up the coast deep into Mendocino County. These spherical boulders that give the spot its name are only completely visible a few times each year during the lowest tides. This little arrangement of boulders creating a tidepool contained a dazzling array of sea creatures, geology, vivid colors and contrasting textures. Add the sunset light which created long shadows and a wonderfully thick cloud layer that diffused the light so nicely. As if that wasn't enough, a wave danced right into the mirror surface just at the moment I fired my shutter. It truly reminded me of a symphony or a concert the way each element played together to create a dynamic masterpiece of nature. Welcome to the Rock Concert.
