Bird Rock & Milky Way

Bird Rock & Milky Way

This is an alternate take from an outing I had last year with Jay G. in Santa Cruz. We started earlier that evening hoping to see stars over Davenport but it was so cloudy, after a few hours, we aborted the mission. As I was heading into Santa Cruz to go home, I got out of the car one last time and suddenly saw the milky way peeking though the cloud layer. We re-convened at Natural Bridges State Beach and grabbed the shot.
This is a 110 second exposure using the FA31mm lens on the Pentax K5. To eliminate star trailing, I use the O-GPS1 accessory which directs the camera sensor to move in sync with the Earth's rotation. A nifty little device. And to complicate matters further, this is a 7-frame panorama, stitched with Photoshop.
The yellow lights on the left horizon are Monterey, CA.
