Electric Blue

Electric Blue

Last evening, Matt G. and I wanted to shoot the Milky Way, so we hiked high in the hills of Morgan Territory Preserve for some clear skies. The whole time we kept seeing indistinct flashes below and figured it was a beacon from nearby Byron Airport. As we were heading home, a few large lightning strikes caught our attention and we shifted to storm chase mode. Some of you know that Matt is an expert storm chaser...and I like to drive fast, so we made a great team!

Racing east toward Discovery Bay, we began to make out the storm clouds and sought out a cornfield and electrical tower to frame the shot. Within minutes, bolts of cloud to ground lightning were illuminating the sky. This storm was well off in the distance and traveling northeast. At some point, it died completely and the warm air around us changed to a cold breeze.
By 2am we were headed home.
