Ear in the Sky
From late last night at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO), near Big Pine, CA. I met Miguel D. at Mammoth Lakes earlier in the evening and we raced south to grab some milky way images under dark skies.
This 130ft dish is the largest of several radio telescopes onsite. After Miguel departed, I remained here until sunrise, soaking in the vast twinkling skies in silence, interrupted only by the occasional soft rumble of these motorized dishes as they periodically adjusted their X-Y tracking, perhaps as if to receive a distant transmission from deep within our galaxy...or beyond.
Lens is the DFA 55mm f/2.8. If you go, be aware that the constant tracking of dishes will cause motion blur; I listened for the motor to get softer, and crossed my fingers between 30 sec shutter clicks.
Enjoy!
