Nu'u Day at Nu'u Bay
On the return trip from Hana one evening, I noted several natural lava arches in the outcroppings and decided to get up early the next morning to make the trek back in the dark for some moody morning photos at first light.
Well, as you might expect, I had a general idea where to go, but in complete darkness, it was a crapshoot to find any of the arches. I would just drive a ways and then get out of the truck, hike down to the shore, let my eyes adjust to the darkness, and hope to see something. Well, I couldn't find what I was looking for, and I happened to hear the rattling of rocks on a beach down below, so I hiked around on this little stretch of black rock beach, which I now know to be Nu'u Bay, and waited for sunrise.
At some point, when it was light enough, I turned around to look up the coast behind me and the arch I wanted was within 1/4th mile away, now too late to get back to the car in time to shoot, so I didn't get the pic I wanted...BUT, was very pleased with this little window in the lava.
This is an 8 sec exposure which I intentionally underexposed to get a little more saturation in the sky.
I did all my shooting alone and given my lack of familiarity with most of these locations and the very powerful and unpredictable ocean and wind conditions, I do not recommend going here unaccompanied. There were surprise surges which had me grabbing my gear to run several times. This was especially scary in near complete darkness when I just could not tell when the big waves were coming until they were crashing right in front of me. BE CAREFUL!
