Pololu Valley Overlook

Pololu Valley Overlook

Sunrise from the North access point to Pololu Valley. The sheer Kohala cliffs slice into the ocean near the norther tip of the north eastern edge of the big island of Hawai'i.
Truth be told, it was the first morning in Hawai'i and I grossly underestimated the drive time around the island to this spot. As I was just coming into Hawi town, a large section of the sky popped with orange radiance. By the time I could get somewhere and set up gear, the epic sky had of course faded. About 20 minutes after that, a very nice consolation prize poked out of the clouds in the form of a single orange ray, and I was able to return home happy.
I highly recommend renting a 4WD vehicle such as a Jeep when visiting the Big Island. It makes the experience more enjoyable, IMO.
