This pier at Whittington Beach Park was once very active during the early sugar plantation days on Hawai'i, but following a devastating tsunami in 1946, the pier and much of the town was destroyed. Today, the concrete structure languishes in the battering surf, slowly succumbing to the ravages of time.
On this morning, I wound up here quite by chance after being lost for awhile in a rain storm and then desperately looking for something interesting to shoot as I rounded the southernmost tip of the Big Island at first light.
